it's proven a long path to get a new record of songs ready for consumption. I'd already taken a substantial respite after the Iris album Six and had no intention to return after the band split, but when you paint you paint, when you sculpt you sculpt, so tweaking in the studio, especially amid a personal heartbreak, I eventually amassed a collection I'm proud of.
getting those demos produced into legit-sounding tracks is another thing, because as much as I want to believe in my writing, the engineering prowess to take something from dirt floor ideas to exciting material is an art in which I have no domain. if you listen to older martin gore demos it's similar. I personally love them, but they're not the level Alan Wilder, or in my case Andrew Sega, could bring them to.
I've been blessed as of late to get to work with someone whose autograph I'd have have sought 30 years ago, and the goal there is to take, for the first time, my actual demos to the higher production values required for a legitimate album release. that said, I record in such an antiquated way, rendering tracks from my Korg Kronos workstation (I mean who uses a workstation keyboard anymore), and through a subpar audio interface, I've been trudging forward in paralyzed reticence, concerned the sonic clarity and value of my own rendered tracks are insufficient for the songs to meet the standard they deserve. we've all heard albums from bands we like where maybe something happened, a member left, or it's a side project, and there's a lower quality that almost hinders your ability to love that record. songwriting takes too much work to let that happen, but Robin from Machine X is graciously working with me to get this one out of the doldrums and ready to actually release. I'm grateful.
what some older followers of Iris would find interesting, I initially started this out with none other than Matt Morris (O.G. Iris, Disconnect). we ended up forgoing the effort, though Matt's production level is definitely that of Andrew's, if not better. yet I had a feel for what I wanted, and as we moved further into the project, the overall vibe seemed to drift away from that. me getting in my own way again, so I apologize to anyone who would have been interested. I have a feeling we will still put something out together, I really do.
so all of that long diatribe to share something I'd just happened upon in my Dropbox. it's Matt's version of a track called There Was Never you and I. sorry I took this long to explain why I'm sharing it, and yes some of the lyrics are half baked, and yes it ends early, but someone might dig it.
